When you purchase a mobile home, it’s likely that you will make some home improvements over a period of time. These improvements may range from installing new mobile home paneling and floors to new cabinets. Installing new cabinets in your mobile home will give it a new lease on life, and will most likely be the first step to a series of additional alterations. Follow these steps to successfully install new cabinets in your mobile home.

Step 1 – Planning
Before you purchase new cabinets, you should first devise a plan. Measure the space that you have available and determine not only how many cabinets you want, but also where you want them to go. If you are planning to install kitchen cabinets, you will need to measure the width of the appliances and how they will affect the space for your cabinets.

Step 2 – Demolish in Stages
To begin demolition, you will need to be methodical and complete the task in stages. Doing so will make the process easier. Be sure to wear a dust mask and safety goggles, as there will be plenty of dust created during the demolition process. You should first remove all the doors and drawers, and then start to remove the lower cabinets if you have any. Finally, remove all the upper cabinets.

Step 3 – Measure Up
Once all the walls are bare, you can begin the installation process. The plan that you drew up earlier will provide the exact measurements for your mobile home cabinets. Using a tape measure, follow the measurements on the plan and mark the location where the cabinets will be placed. If you notice any problems, such as cabinets not fitting correctly, check the plan to ensure that the measurements are correct.

Step 4 – Mounting Upper Cabinets
When you start mounting the cabinets, you will need to install the upper cabinets first. Make sure that the upper cabinets in your mobile home are secured onto studs, as it will prevent them from falling when they’re full. Use a carpenter’s level to make sure that they’re straight. Use clamps to hold them in place while you install the other upper cabinets.

Step 5 – Mounting Lower Cabinets
Once all of the upper cabinets have been installed, start to install the lower cabinets following the same steps that you followed to install the upper ones. If you are installing long cabinets that reach from the mobile home floor to the ceiling, you might need to use shims to keep them level and square. That is because many ceilings and floors are not parallel. Often, a pre-purchased cabinet will be supplied with schematics that make attachment easier. Always consider using these over your own designs.
